Pollinators of Oriental persimmon in Japan

چکیده

Abstract Japanese farmers who grow Oriental persimmon, Diospyros kaki Thunb. (Ericales: Ebenaceae), occasionally introduce Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) hives into their orchards during the flowering season, mainly because cultivars such as ‘Fuyu’ require pollination for stable fruit set. However, wild pollinators might serve this function. Thus, we aimed at identifying most important of D. in Japan by surveying visitation frequency across ten prefectures and efficiency. The predominant flower visitors were Bombus ardens ardens Smith A. , with similar efficiencies. estimated threshold number pollen grains set was 27, which comparable to deposited a single visit either species, meaning one these dominant probably induces more multiple visits further ensured To achieve > 80% set, than about 70 needed. These results indicate that several bees would be sufficient ‘Fuyu’.

Persimmon breeding in Japan for pollination-constant non-astringent (PCNA) type with marker-assisted selection.

Oriental persimmon (Diospyros kaki) originated in Eastern Asia, and many indigenous cultivars have been developed in China, Japan, and Korea. These cultivars are classified into four groups based on their natural astringency loss on the tree and seed formation: pollination-constant non-astringent (PCNA), pollination-variant non-astringent (PVNA), pollination-constant astringent (PCA), and polli...

Persimmon growing in NSW

China is the world’s biggest producer, followed by Japan and Korea while Italy is the main European producer (70 000 tonnes in 1993). The Australian persimmon industry has a farm-gate value of between $9 million and $10 million, with 280 producers (2000). Annual production is 2100 tonnes from approximately 300 000 trees. Most plantings (65%) consist of young trees less than six years old; more ...

Carotenoids in fruits of different persimmon cultivars.

Carotenoids in the peel and the flesh of persimmon fruit were identified, and the contents of carotenoids in the fleshes of 46 different persimmon cultivars were analyzed. The results indicated that 31 specific carotenoids were detected in both cultivars of persimmons, among which nine specific carotenoids were characterized. β-cryptoxanthin was the most abundant carotenoid among all individual...

Pervasiveness of Parasites in Pollinators

Many pollinator populations are declining, with large economic and ecological implications. Parasites are known to be an important factor in the some of the population declines of honey bees and bumblebees, but little is known about the parasites afflicting most other pollinators, or the extent of interspecific transmission or vectoring of parasites. Here we carry out a preliminary screening of...
